Arcam Alpha 5 CD Player Upgrade.The Arcam Alpha 5 is a very well known player - one for its sound quality but also for its upgradability. NET Audio has produced a superlative upgrade for the Alpha 5 which puts this player into a totally different sonic league. The upgrade is carried out entirely on the DAC board itself and is relatively straightforward if you have good soldering skills. Alternatively the modifications can be completed for you by NET Audio. The NET Audio Arcam Alpha 5 Super NOS board is a purpose designed board specifically for the Arcam 5 CD player (not the 5+), and has been developed to raise the sonic performance of the 5 to levels only attainable by spending by spending thousands of pounds on new equipment. It replaces the original clock in the Alpha 5 with a very stable low jitter device as well as converting the player to Non Over Sampling by removing the original digital filter. This has sonic benefits as the data being fed to the DAC is now the original data that was on the CD itself when the recording was made, nothing added and nothing removed, providing the best insight to the original work. Extensive modifications are also made to improve the analogue and power supply stages on the Arcam DAC board so that the improved performance that is being generated at the DACs output is now faithfully reproduced at the phono sockets on the rear of the CD player. The original opamps are replaced with the very high performance Burr Brown OPA627 devices which are known for their unbeatable sound quality. Elna STARGET capacitors are used to replace the decoupling capacitors plus WIMA polypropylene capacitors are added to improve the PSU rails and output stage. Other modifications are carried out to extract the very best performance from this player to provide you with superlative sound quality which will be hard to beat at any price. This is now a truly superb CD player that few could equal in performance. The upgrade extracts the very best from this well known DAC chip (the TDA1541A) and produces such an improvement to the Alpha 5 that you would not know you were listening to the same CD player. The player now portrays real life dynamics and expression, superb imaging and stage depth, deep tight bass and smooth detailed treble.
